Op de dag dat Steve Jobs stierf, kreeg mijn vader een I-pad. Met de I-pad opende de digitale wereld zich definitief voor hem. De I-pad is makkelijk te bedienen. De letters op het toetsenbord zitten dicht bij elkaar, dan heb je ze sneller gevonden.
'Waarom zitten die dingen niet gewoon op alfabetische volgorde,' heb ik hem vroeger heel vaak horen zeggen. Met zijn vinger cirkelend boven het toetsenbord op zoek naar de e, en de f die dan weer heel ergens anders staat. Op deze manier kostte het overbrengen van zijn groet te veel tijd, dus mailde hij nooit.
Tegenwoordig ontvang ik mail van hem: 'Hallo Elke, ik zie vanaf mijn I-pad dat je man al heel lang in het café zit op het Kadijksplein. Groet je vader.'
'Dag vader,' schreef ik terug, 'ik ben blij dat jij zijn routes nu ook bijhoudt. Als-ie die navigatiefunctie een keer uitzet, weten wij genoeg. Groet je dochter.'
Waarop mijn moeder tijdens het skypen zegt: 'En jij dan? Waarom kunnen wij op papa's I-pad niet zien waar jij overal naartoe gaat?'
